Call for Book Reviewers and Bloggers

Jez Collins

Founder of the Birmingham Popular Music Archive and Exec Producer of the documentary Made in Birmingham: Reggae Punk Bhangra (you may discern a common theme here!) I get way more pleasure than is acceptable from uncovering obscure facts and stories about music from my home city. The sight of some long forgotten band performing on stage, captured in a crappy in 1970’s photo, is likely to send me over the edge!
In my spare time, I work with some fellow popular music and radio fanatics in the Birmingham Centre for Media and Cultural Research at Birmingham City University in the UK.

Dexys: One Day I'm Going to Soar

Dexys' first album in 27 years highlights the mercurial talents of Kevin Rowland and bandmates on this suburb album of love, loathing and confession.

Janelle Monáe: The Electric Lady

A redrawing of black, gender and female sexual politics for the 21st century on this brilliantly realised album by one of the world's most innovative and important musicians.

Lau Nau: Valohiukkanen

A slight deviation in sound for Lau Nau, but they remain at their best when reverting to type.

William Tyler: Impossible Truth

Shimmering, textured, and glorious. A sublime album from the most creative solo acoustic guitar player around.

Peace: In Love

Young audiences will love it, free and ignorant maybe, of the influences so apparent in Peace’s music, whilst others, those a bit more long in the tooth, will fail to understand the fuss and hype and will be tempted to dismiss the album and the band as a one off, devoid of originality.

Ty Segall: Twins [28.Oct.12]
Jonti: Sine & Moon [26.Aug.12]
Photek: Dj Kicks [24.Jun.12]
Bang Data: La Sopa [12.Jun.12]
