As to the rejection of my understanding of the connection between lesbianism and witchcraft on 'Buffy', I have never said that BVS's creator or writers made a conscious (and consciously homophobic) decision to directly cast lesbianism as social pathology and physical addiction.

To think of Willow and Tara only in terms of their lesbianism is to do a disservice to lovers who were fully realized, regardless of their gender or orientation.

This was a tragic ending to one of prime-time television's most engaging love stories. More disturbing, as well as more socially and politically troublesome, however, is that Tara's death completes what has become a rather homophobic and pathological representation of lesbian desires and relationships over the course of the past season.

Given Buffy's track record for playing with conventions, there may be hope for Dawn Summers on the horizon, but as of now she is definitely the Scrappy-Doo of the Scooby Gang.
We've all learned a lot about the politics of being young and being adult, about sexuality and gender roles, as well as about the difficulties of daily life from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but perhaps we've learned the most about all of this from Xander.
