This year marks the 20th Anniversary of the Hot August Blues Festival (HAB). Founder and organizer Brad Selko first held the blues jam in his backyard, shuttling the musicians from nearby hotels himself. That’s dedication! Now a favorite of musicians and fans, this premiere music fest continues its double-decade tradition of providing end-of-summer fun at Oregon Ridge Park in Cockeysville, Maryland. If you’re looking for some comfy indoor experience, this ain’t it. This is a down home, get sweaty, celebrate-the-blues fest. It has something for everyone, even performance art, and this year promises to be as amazing as the year before. Brad has assembled a great festival team, so the bottom line is that you, as a spectator, can enjoy one mind-blowing musical act after another—blues, blues-rock, Americana, and other hybrids.
On this year’s anniversary bill are Gov’t Mule, Trombone Shorty, Magic Slim, Justin Townes Earle, Locos Por Juana, and Chris Jacobs Band, among others (see website for full line-up). The schedule seesaws between two stages so you can get more blues for your buck. Previous HAB fests have included Keb Mo, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Joe Bonamassa, Robert Randolph Band, Taj Mahal, Joan Osbourne, and Lyle Lovett.
Bring some chairs, even a small tent, for this daylong, memorable music festival—they’ll have plenty of cold drinks, including beer and wine, to help you keep cool. Advanced general admission, VIP, and Group tickets are available. Consider carpooling and share the nine-dollar parking pass. If you’re in the Baltimore area, you can also pick up tickets at the Green Turtle, Hunt Valley, Minas Gallery in Hampden, The Other Side, in Towson, and Mother’s Bar & Grill in the city. All of these establishments require cash or check for HAB ticket purchases. So, what are you waiting for? The summer’s not going to get any cooler! Gates open at 11:15 a.m.—see you there.
