Mad Decent Block Party '15 is Almost Upon Us

by A Noah Harrison

25 June 2015

Mad Decent's annual EDM/hip-hop festival will hit 18 cities in North America during August and September.

Mad Decent Block Party began in 2008 as a free festival in Philadelphia, home of the Mad Decent record label. In 2015, the event will tour eighteen cities—twenty-one total stops—across the US and Canada for about fifty bucks admission. The festival kicks off in Atlanta at the very end of July and ends up in Chicago about two months later. The Block Party caters to a younger, rave-oriented crowd, so dance music is the name of the game. You’ll see an assortment of acts on the hip-hop and electronic spectrum, most influenced by contemporary trends like trap and whatever comes after dubstep.

The festival’s lineup fluctuates massively over its summer run. At each stop, between four and nine acts will hit the stage. A few, like the reggae-influenced EDM group Major Lazer, led by Mad Decent founder Diplo, will grace about half the tour stops. There will also be several notable one-offs: in Brooklyn, South African hip-hop trio Die Antwoord and experimental rapper Tyler, the Creator; in Toronto, future garage group XXYYXX; and in LA, synthpop act Cut Copy and auto-tuned-pop-rapper-turned-R&B-heartthrob T-Pain. The festival naturally also features a number Mad Decent-signed acts: bass drop champs Zeds Dead, electro producer Dillon Francis, the Skrillex-Diplo collaboration Jack Ü, and many more.

Judging from last year’s tour, we can expect a few unexpected surprises—some on-stage sleepiness and an artist cancellation here and there. (It seems serious meme rapper Riff Raff has already snuck out of the Brooklyn lineup, and the New Orleans stop was completely canceled.) Still, the festival always manages to deliver hours of entertainment, if not intermittently. The lineup, depending on the stop, should have enough going for it to suit most contemporary EDM fans. It’s important to remember this is, at its core, a rave. So prepare yourself for the thirty-minute bathroom lines and the hunt for that one drippy water fountain in the very back corner of the festival grounds (but beer vendors at every turn). All in all, the emphasis is on the party, so if you can handle the sweat and the crowds, you can handle Mad Decent. You must be eighteen years or older to party. Tour dates are below but also please visit the Block Party website to find ticket and lineup information for the specific stops.
