Absentstar: Absenstar EP

Absentstar
Absentstar EP

Windy City newcomers Absentstar had this EP produced by Dan Wilson, he of Semisonic fame. So as a result, it’s not surprising that Absentstar goes for the softer side of rock with these grandiose, Coldplay-tinged tracks beginning with “Half Life”. Meanwhile, the ensuing “For God Sakes” tries to revisit that same feel, but fails early and then miserably with a rather paltry, flaccid chorus that leads nowhere fast. The highlight (yes, there are only four songs here, so one has to be a highlight, right?) is “If You Like It” which has a snippy, strutting, cocksure attitude or vibe throughout. Think of something by Suede or the Tears and you get the gist of this ditty. Another keeper is the rich “If What You Mean Is Harm” which is led by strong vocals.
