As a member of the Constantines, Steve Lambke has earned many critical accolades. He should not receive similar acclaim for his new side project, Baby Eagle. His debut album under his new alias finds him trading aggressive rock music for sensitive folk songs. The main problem with Baby Eagle is Lambke’s vocal contribution. The slight crackle of his voice suits a rootsy singer, but his hopefully deliberately poor sense of pitch becomes distracting. Some songs are almost begging to be melodic pop gems, and they would be if Lambke would actually carry a tune. The colorful instrumentals, which are varied and sensitive arrangements of piano, mandolin, acoustic guitar and percussion, save the album. Normally, a twenty-five minute CD would feel too short, but at the conclusion of Baby Eagle, few listeners will be begging for more.
