Circo’s leader José Luis Abreau or ‘Fofé’ has a bald head with shapes printed or tattooed close to his left ear and in photographs he sometimes seems to hulk like Lawrence Fishburne in The Matrix, but the group’s music is less idiosyncratic than he looks. It’s vivifying New Wave pop, a quick blast of uplift, a collection of songs that seem made to be released as singles rather than joined together as an album — energy drink music, taurine songs. Cursi, the band’s third album and their Sony debut, is one of those CDs that wants to be your best friend for a season and then give way to something else equally uplifting and ginseng-infused. Twenty years from now you’ll hear “Antes del Fin” or “Velocidades Luz” by accident on the radio and think, “I remember when we were all singing along to that! That was so much fun. God, I loved this song. Haven’t thought of it in ages. What happened to them? There was that bald guy, Fluffy, Furby, what was his name…”
