I Come to Shanghai is a psychedelic electro-pop duo whose releases operate on two rules. They mustn’t exceed the amount of space that’s allowed on one side of vinyl and they need to feel like full releases. They achieved this with both volume one and two of Eternal Life; both managed to stand out as the group’s finest work to date. They’ve decided to package the two together and the decision only betters their end results. On both volumes the duo floats between Pink Floyd-esque instrumental moments of whimsy and melancholy and something that sounds more similar to Dent May’s recent Do Things, except here, the music actually feels honest. The only real drawback to Eternal Life Vol. 1 & 2 is that, since both volumes were so comprehensive to begin with, it can be a bit exhausting, but the ride’s definitely one worth taking.
