In 1974, young Fielding Pierce (Billy Crudup) is watching the news, when he sees that his girlfriend Sarah (Jennifer Connelly) has been killed in a car bomb explosion (reportedly engineered by 'terrorists,' that all-purpose contemporary cultural monster).
