First things first: I’m only here today reviewing this album because I thought its title was funny (almost as clever as their label’s name). And because I heard Patent Pending were punk. Patent Pending’s blend of Thursday’s post-hardcore and Home Grown’s peppy ska-punk is patent indeed, but I’ll be damned if it isn’t well executed. Plus, there’s a little something else; I’m hesitant to say Simple Plan, because I despise them, but there’s certainly some of that emo whining present. Wait a minute — I think I just described Taking Back Sunday. No matter; these Patent Pending kids are alright, and the Long Island, NY, group’s first label release does what it needs to. Pop-punk was never a thinking man’s genre. Same goes for lyrics about Los Angeles, sleeping in late, friends, girls, touring across the country, old-fashioned angst, and everyone’s favorite Internet cartoon, Homestar Runner. Remember: it’s only rock ‘n’ roll. Free your inner teenager and enjoy.
