Possessed by a dynamic energy which infuses each of the 23 minutes of their debut EP, the members of Seattle quartet Siberian produce a vibrant sound structured around the band’s definite sense of musicality. Frontman Finn Parnell fearlessly leads the group through the six cuts which make up the album and should cause listeners who embrace the stylings of similar, guitar-driven indie pop bands to grow enthused about the promise of a future full length. At times jangling rhythmically, at others serving melodic and momentous purposes without being overly technical or virtuosic, the riffs played by Parnell and fellow guitarist Colin Wolberg supply the band’s sound with its tone while Zach Tillman (bass) and Aaron Benson (drums) lend a sense of forward motion and propulsion. Recorded by Seldom drummer/onetime Pedro the Lion contributor Casey Foubert, Hey Celestial! has just the right mixture of polished and raw sounds. Standout tracks include the sweetly harmonic “Paper Birds” and album closer “Talk to the Moon” which features an active, pulsing bass line from Tillman and a plucky lead vocal from Parnell. Siberian hits all the right notes to make their debut a success and a catalyst for future projects.
