Slow Down Molasses: 100% Sunshine

A reverence for acts falling within the broad spectrum of the Velvet Underground to Mogwai manifests itself on 100% Sunshine, the latest album from Saskatchewan’s Slow Down Molasses. Capitulating to such influences, the sprawling guitars of “Moon Queen” give way to the math rock of “No Riots”, while Dinosaur Jr. is omnipresent on “Night Terrors”. Mixing in a jangling cover of Galaxie 500’s “Flowers” for good measure, the aptly titled “Intentions” owes a debt to a hungry U2. Unplug the guitar pedals and synths and it’s drummer Jordan Kurtz that holds the studied pastiche of 100% Sunshine together. Helmed by producer Chad Munson, the record finds Slow Down Molasses hitting all the right post-punk touchpoints for the sake of sound rather than song.
