Holopaw
Oh, Glory. Oh, Wilderness.
(Bakery Outlet)
Releasing: 3 November

John Orth’s voice has this quivering quality that’s a refreshing antidote to all the auto-tune found on the radio. “The Art Teacher and the Little Stallion” is a good song to enjoy a sunny day with, or to play on a rainy day in protest to the weather. The song has a crisp sound to it, making me wish I knew the words so I could sing along.

“Selfish Gene”, along with all the other songs on the Jimi Tenor/Tony Allen collaboration, Inspiration Information Vol. 4, came together in under a week, but the loose vibe feels exquisitely seasoned. Allen’s stumbling drum beat owns the track, gathering everything else into a beautiful tumbleweed of a jam.

School of Seven Bells
Alpinisms Deluxe Edition
(Vagrant)
Releasing: 3 October

School of Seven Bells is releasing a deluxe edition of their debut album, Alpinisms, October 3rd. In this case, “deluxe” means a digital-only version with all the original songs plus 9 bonus tracks of reworkings, remixes, and alternate takes of tracks from the critically acclaimed album.

Their new version of “Iamundernodisguise” sounds like an estrogen-laced version of Fleet Foxes, only what that band does with guitar strings, sisters Alejandra and Claudia Deheza do with their voices.

School of Seven Bells kick off their first North American headlining tour tonight at Johnny Brenda’s in Philadelphia, PA. Depreciation Guild, Phantogram, Warpaint, and The xx are among the openers on the tour. Check out the rest of the tour dates after the jump .

Timothy Egan, author of The Worst Hard Time, releases his next work of nonfiction with The Big Burn: Teddy Roosevelt and the Fire that Saved America. Once again tackling the American West, Egan tells the story of the legendary forest fires that ripped through Washington, Idaho, and Montana on August 10, 1910. As park rangers fought these massive flames, President Roosevelt and United States Forest Service Chief Gifford Pinchot saved the land through the establishment of national parks.

Below is a video of the author reading the opening of The Big Burn (as part of an interview with Nick O’Connell, editor of The Writer’s Workshop Review). In just first few paragraphs, Egan paints a vivid, specific picture of the time of the fire, allowing the reader to empathize with this story from long ago.

The Big Burn releases October 6, 2009. Published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.
