The promo trailer for Gary Shteyngart’s new novel Super Sad True Love Story features an interesting cast that includes actor James Franco as well as literary notables Edmund White, Mary Gaitskill, Jeffrey Eugenides, and Jay McInerney. The Russian Jewish immigrant has the famous guest stars humorously point out Shteyngart’s failings and general ignorance. What it has to do with the book is never clear, but hey, he comes off a as a fun guy who just wants to win readers through his associations with others. This makes more sense than a book blurb these days, and is more fun to watch.

Upcoming, Current and/or Recent: Clarkson, the consummate supporting actress of our time, has recently stolen scenes in the films of Woody Allen (2008’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona and 2009’s Whatever Works) and Martin Scorsese on this year’s Shutter Island. Clarkson will next be seen in in IFC’s Cairo Time, in a romantic, leading lady turn.

The Old Spice marketing team has made a big splash this past week with their savvy Twitter campaign and personalized videos responding to the most interesting tweets. Hats off to their real-time efforts. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Check out this parody of the original Old Spice video/commercial, produced by the Harold B. Lee Library at Brigham Young University and featuring an impressive stand in for the ridiculously good looking Old Spice man. Time to visit the library.

Appalachian Voices, a folk group comprised of singer-songwriter Daniel Martin Moore, cellist/vocalist Ben Sollee, and, most famously, singer/songwriter/guitarist Yim Yames (The Artist Formerly Known as Jim James) of My Morning Jacket, is about to embark on a nine-date tour of the US, starting on July 22nd at the Opera House in Lexington, Kentucky.

Solle and Moore released an album, Dear Companion earlier this year (produced by James), but this month marks the first live performances of this trio formation.

However, there’s more than just pretty music here—there’s a message, too.  The venture is hoped to raise public awareness about the controversial practice of Mountaintop Removal coal mining, which takes place throughout Appalachia.

According to James’ website, “a portion of the proceeds from the tour will benefit Appalachian Voices, for which the tour was named, an organization devoted to ending mountaintop removal coal mining together with diverse environmental problems impacting the central and southern Appalachian Mountains.”

Be sure to catch them for one of these unique and intimate performances.
