Although Diego Bernal’s smart, sample-based instrumental hip hop/electronic record is only available for free download at this time, it would probably play even better on vinyl. Look at the cover: wasn’t this meant for an earlier decade? Alas, it’s free, so why quibble? For Corners is excellent; in places, it’s a timely tribute to J Dilla’s carefully chopped celebrations of soul and funk 45s, but Bernal’s sample choices are diverse—his pieces sometimes peak in Prefuse-esque glitch when they’re not spooky and as smooth as silk—vinyl crackles included, even if it ain’t vinyl.
The Pet Shop Boys accepted the award for Outstanding Contribution to Music this week at the Brit Awards and also performed a medley of their hits (along with their excellent new single “Love etc.”). Even brief appearances from Lady GaGa on “What Have I Done To Deserve This?” and the Killers’ Brandon Flowers on “It’s A Sin” couldn’t ruin the seemingly endless stream of pop perfection. Is it possible that their music sounds more contemporary and relevant now than it did in the ‘80s?
Their upcoming album Yes hits stores on March 23rd.
Brooklyn’s Vivian Girls have a new song called “Lake House” available to stream on their MySpace page. It’s a nice piece of reverb-drenched rock and is taken from the eighth instalment of Almost Ready’s The World’s Lousy With Ideas compilation. Check it out.
Post-rock band Saxon Shore have announced plans to release their latest full-length through Japanese label & Records on April 15th. US and European release dates will follow shortly after. The group’s last four albums, three EPs and an LP, have all been issued through Philadelphia label Burnt Toast Vinyl.
Three songs from the new album are currently streaming on the band’s MySpace. The record is to be titled It Doesn’t Matter and features characteristically beautiful artwork, consisting of colorful lines in a geometric shape against a black background.
