Fourteen years ago this week: the Smashing Pumpkins released their third album, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, on Virgin Records. For the first and only time in the band’s career, the epic multi-disc album debuted at number one on the Billboard Charts. The album earned the band seven Grammy Award nominations, and won best hard rock performance for “Bullet with Butterfly Wings”. Mellon Collie was intended to be a concept album symbolizing the cycle of life and death. As a whole, the album expanded the band’s repertoire by incorporating diverse musical styles, giving the band multiple dimensions. Upon its release, head Pumpkin Billy Corgan described the album as an interpretation of “the human condition of mortal sorrow”.

Stereophonics
Keep Calm and Carry On
(Mercury)
Releasing: 16 November

Stereophonics return with their latest album, Keep Calm and Carry On, via Mercury Records on November 16th.  Watch the video for Keep Calm and Carry On‘s first single, “Innocent”, a melodic rock gem. The video looks keenly retro, with band members playing in a jovial English street of a bygone era. It reminds me of Weezer’s “Buddy Holly”, but a bit more translucent and color-happy at the end.

This video features one static shot of Alex Turner against a white background singing into a tape recorder, and nothing else. There’s an odd humor to the whole production, as he mimes the lyrics with lazy, cheeky irony, but for most part he’s staring into the camera, and the minimalism demands attention paid to the song and the singer.
