The Killer Inside Me stars Casey Affleck as Lou Ford, a sheriff and murderous sociopath. Jessica Alba, Kate Hudson, Bill Pulman, and Liam Aiken co-star. Audiences who have seen The Killer Inside Me, based on the novel by Jim Thompson, tend to point to the film’s graphic and horrific nature. Although, you don’t get a huge sense of that from the sleek trailer. The teaser for Winterbottom’s film emphasizes the suggestion or looming threat of violence, with powerful results. The shot of a gloved hand hopelessly outstretched to a foot is haunting in its simple action.
Married musicians Josh Ritter and Dawn Landes entertain with a performance of “Southern Pacifica” in their Brooklyn apartment. The song is from Ritter’s new album, So Runs the World Away, just released this week.
Not sure when summer officially begins, but the Pains of Being Pure at Heart have already kicked off what they’re declaring as “The Summer of Say No to Love” by announcing a new 7” and a short June jaunt of the east coast and south with one of this year’s most hyped newcomers, Surfer Blood. The new single “Say No to Love”, steaming over at Pitchfork, is just what you’d expect from the Brooklyn band, a perfectly sunny, strummy, breathy number that gets you even more in the mood for a vacation. Slumberland releases the single proper on June 8, while the tour begins in Milford, CT on June 3.

Theresa Andersson may be Swedish, but she has Americana deep in her bones. So, it’s fitting that she uprooted herself from Scandinavia and planted her flag deep in New Orleans at age 18 to play her fiddle with Anders Osborne. On “Oh Mary”, a classic black spiritual from the pre-Civil War era that Mike Farris recently virtually claimed as his own in a smokin’ version, Andersson takes a jazzier, but still soulful approach to the tune. She loops her emotive fiddle licks through a synthesizer and does the same thing with her voice towards the end to achieve a choral effect. This clip is from the recent DVD release Theresa Andersson: Live at Le Petit, available at theresaandersson.com.
