Best Coast have spent the better part of the past year playing up their feline and pot fixations to the joy of many and to the irritation of, well, many. For the band’s fans, the video premiere for the track “Crazy for You” over at I Can Has Cheezburger will likely make Cosentino and company all the more precious. For the band’s detractors, the video will likely make Cosentino and company much more annoying. No matter, though. Cats are cute. They like catnip. That kitty director could probably use some. What more needs to be said?

Remembering the innocence of youth can often more be pleasant than the original experience of actually being young and naïve. That’s why looking at old photographs can be more fun than what the experience of what one was really doing when the picture was snapped. This act serves as a metaphor for the sweet, sweet music of Allo Darlin’. They grab hold of the dulcet sentiments of life with a youthful exuberance while at the same time wryly capture the wisdom of someone who is older than that now looking back—but without the cynicism that pervades so much of pop these days. Their “Polaroid Song” works as a meta-commentary as it explicitly refers to an out of date technology used to ensnare the present, complete with what their Australian antecedents the Go-Betweens called “that striped sunlight sound”—full of jangly guitars, bouncy rhythms, and a general happiness. Director Jun keung Cheung’s video provides the song with a movie soundtrack—specifically referencing John Hughes’ Breakfast Club in a Be Kind Rewind manner. It’s goofy, in the best possible way, like the way the characters in the movie were. It fits the song in a fun way, and the song itself bears repeated listening in the way one watches old movies that are close to the heart.
La Sera has announced the release of a new single off their upcoming debut album. “Devil Hearts Grow Gold” is a “woozy, layered nugget with a smidge of twang” and comes on the heels of the band’s first single “Never Come Around”. The 7” featuring “Devil Hearts Grow Gold” and a cover of “Dedicated to the One I Love” was released on January 18th while the full album will debut on February 15th.

Southern California trio Best Coast have amped up the cuteness in their latest video for “Crazy For You”. Backing up their ‘60s style vibe are the delightful kittens of Icanhascheezburger.com. The website that has developed a cult following lends its cheeky humor to the bands poppy title track of their debut album for an overload of adorable. Fans are encouraged to enter the I Can Has Cheezeburger contest for the opportunity to win tickets for Best Coast’s upcoming tour along with some other “cat-tastic” prize packs.
When not being directed by their fury friends, Best Coast has kept busy with an appearance on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon and releasing a limited edition Summer Is Forever split 7” with Wavves consisting of previously unreleased tracks. The release comes just as the two bands prepare for their national co-headlining tour which begins January 21 in San Diego.
Go Satomi’s, go! Filmed in Tokyo and directed by Noriko Oishi, “Super Duper Rescue Heads!” is the first video from Deerhoof’s upcoming release, Deerhoof vs. Evil (out January 25 in the US via Polyvinyl and the day before on ATP in the UK). The video begins relatively low-key, with Satomi buying some snacks before kicking back to watch some tube. Things take a psychedelic left turn from there, however, with a glammed-up Satomi busting out some rad moves in the midst of a projection light show freak-out. Cool.
In other news, the band will begin a tour in support of the record on January 27 in Sacramento, California. Seemingly intent on fighting evil on a global scale, the band will take their act worldwide, paying visits to France and nearly all of Scandinavia before perfoming their Milk Man LP (!) in its entirety at Alexandra Palace in London.
