On a rare trip to the US, Iceland’s Sindri Már Sigfússon, aka Sin Fang, performed a few free shows including ones in Boston and in New York. Below are a few photos and a video clip from the New York, or “The Annie O Music Series presents a special evening with Sin Fang on Tuesday, March 11 from 6-8 PM at Chez Andre at The Standard, East Village”.
Reuben and the Dark, a Canadian five-piece band led by Reuben Bullock, have played shows at CMJ, SXSW and other important festivals for up-and-coming artists in the past year. The group has yet to release more than one song, you will only find an official release of “Rolling Stone” online and we have it for you to stream below. The band is signed to Arts & Crafts and their debut was produced by Florence + The Machine drummer Chris Hayden and Stephen Kozmeniuk. They sound “darker” than many of their peers in the folk rock scene with their pained bluesy lyrics and four part vocal harmonies (at least from the show I saw). Reuben’s brother plays percussion and joined him at the front of the stage for a song but the band’s short set demonstrated a good bit of potential without them appearing immediately derivative. Check out “Rolling Stone” and some photos from Rockwood Music hall below.
If you haven’t heard about Grand Theft Auto V yet, its surprising given that the game’s newest iteration has had over $1 billion in sales in just a matter of weeks. For their game, Rockstar Games has gone all out in compiling an in-game soundtrack, releasing three album/compilations from the more than forty-hours of music that can be heard on various game radio stations. Original score and songs were crafted by Tangerine Dream, Flying Lotus, Twin Shadow and many others. And to celebrate the release of the game and the music, Rockstar partnered with the Film Society of Lincoln Center to present the unique ‘Live from Los Santos’ concert, with performances of the game’s score, live with a visual backdrop of scenes from the game, at the Church of St. Paul the Apostle in New York. This last minute addition to the New York Film Festival also included an afterparty at (le) Poisson Rouge, featuring DJ sets from Flying Lotus and Giles Peterson but we only have pictures from the church below as well as the game’s trailer and the playlist of songs Flying Lotus selected for his in-game station. You can Browse the three disc’s worth of songs that are on the official soundtrack and purchase the album online now, but if you are patient, Rockstar filmed the concert, so maybe there will be a commercial release of it in the near future.
The crowd for last week’s sold-out Dinosaur Jr. show at Black Cat in Washington, DC was one of the most diverse audiences I’ve seen at a rock show in some time, especially with regard to age. From young teens to mid-lifers, the variety of faces in the crowd testified to the unique appeal Dinosaur Jr. offers in a fragmented music industry. The band’s discography spans 27 years, an age acknowledged in urban legend as the time at which rock icons are destined to expire. But if the current tour and latest album I Bet on Sky are reliable indications, then Dinosaur Jr. shows no sign of slowing. The band is on tour throughout the month of November.
