Mission of Burma guitarist and cofounder Roger Miller has released a rousing new single, “Big Steam”, via Good Road Recordings. The accompanying video offers a disorienting stream of found footage, color manipulation, and shots of roller coasters and trains in motion. Featuring Larry Dersch (The Binary System) and Brian Arnold, both the track and its flipside, “Dream Interpretation”, have been described by Miller as “a deliberate sonic referencing of Pink Floyd’s Piper at the Gates of Dawn”.

Insane Clown Posse have been getting, strangely, popular again.

Although the face-painted duo have never truly gone away, their mainstream profile has been increasing year after year. Whether it be Saturday Night Live parodying their overstuffed infomercials for their annual Gathering of the Juggalos, their inexplicable collaboration with Jack White, or, perhaps, their lyrics about quasi-spirituality (including a claim that “there’s magic everywhere in this bitch”) being endlessly ridiculed, the duo have managed to work their way into the national conversation now and then, although often in a wildly negative light.

J. Mascis is my best friend. Sometimes he’ll come over and sit across the table from me and we’ll discuss politics—ok, I will—he’ll just sit there brooding the way he does. Yes, the number five best guitar player of all time according to Spin will retort with a cold ambivalent stare while I unload my woes over a pint. When that’s finished we’ll grab our skateboards and go out—um—thrashing. When that gets old we hop into my convertible and cruise around town, everything captured in slow motion frames from the spinning wheel wells to my belly-aching laughter at something J. must have muttered between frowns. We’re stylized, he and I through the perspectives of everyone looking on and the over-driven guitars reverberating off brick walls of the city.
