Backed only by synths, bass, and analog drum machines, HEIDEMANN lets her strong vocals soar on her debut EP.

Brooklyn-based (who isn’t these days?) musician Monika Heidemann, who records under the all-caps HEIDEMANN, peddles in emotive-synth driven music that emphasizes her voice. The instrumental backing to her music, comprised of synths, bass, and analog drum programming, is largely unobtrusive, allowing her voice to rise to the forefront and create a somewhat brooding mood. Orphan, her debut EP, forms a clear statement of intent in this regard.

The lush, synth-driven environs of the Frail's LoveDeathLegends is perfect for fans of Hot Chip and Michael Jackson.

From a single synthesizer one can generate a seemingly endless repertoire of sounds, a fact which an equally endless amount of young bands around the world have capitalized on since the creation of that instrument. The Frail finds itself amongst this burgeoning electronic music scene, and like the genre’s luminaries, it’s a group that knows quite well how to wring a potent hook out of its synth arsenal. The trio is comprised of Daniel Lannon (vocals and synths), Israel Chavarin (bass), and Kevin Durr (synths). Their debut, LoveDeathLegend, follows two EPs, Count on This and the fittingly titled Lasers Over Lovers. LoveDeathLegend finds The Frail making a mellifluous batch of synth-driven pop tunes, enhanced in large part by Lannon’s Michael Jackson-esque vocals.

Detroit duo craft a tapestry of lush dream pop and supple vocals in new single, "Escalators".

Lush production and silken vocals coalesce in a trippy brand of dream pop with Detroit duo Sleepless Inn. The former is the product of aural architect Eddie Logix; the latter emanates from the pipes of Laura Finlay and her chanteuse-like approach. That dichotomy is in full display in new single “Escalators”, the follow up to debut EP The Rainbow Room, released in April.

The Gaslight Anthem brings a full-throated rock and roll approach to its performance of many of the tunes on, Get Hurt, their latest studio outing, live on the Wal-Mart Soundcheck stage.

New Jersey rock outfit The Gaslight Anthem are back at their Springsteen-indebted ways with Get Hurt, its latest studio release, available now through Island. PopMatters writer Matt James recently said of the LP, “Where Get Hurt is strong, it’s bulletproof.”

"One Minute More" finds Capital Cities skillfully balancing pop accessibility while also emphasizing their indie rock roots.

With “Safe and Sound”, the LA-based band Capital Cities made a sizeable pop splash, a feat that is becoming all the more common for bands that, like Capital Cities, began in the ever-fertile realm of indie music. Just like CHVRCHES did last year, Capital Cities shows that while indie music aims to stand apart from the type of stuff that one is likely to see climb to the top of the Billboard Top 20, there’s nothing wrong with bringing in unabashed pop accessibility into the indie fold.
