Pixies’ Doolittle turned 25 this past week, not that it much matters—I wasn’t around in 1989 to hear it. When I did, in seventh or eighth grade, it was in full view of Nirvana and Radiohead and all the others Doolittle had inspired, but it still seemed unlike anything that had come after it. It’s tough to think of another record that shaped my taste more up to that point.

On October 9th, 1940, one of the world’s most beloved musicians was born. Amongst the millions of people who are fans of John Lennon, many notable musicians have shown their devotion through music. Founding Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist Hillel Slovak—beloved by fans of the band’s rougher, funk-driven early records—died of a heroin overdose 25 years ago today in his native Los Angeles. Slovak performed on the band’s second and third albums, 1985’s Freaky Styley and 1987’s The Uplift Mofo Party Plan. He was soon replaced by on-and-off-again guitarist John Frusciante, then 18, who went on to perform on the band’s most critically and commercially successful LPs, including 1991’s Blood Sugar Sex Magik and 1999’s Californication. “My Lovely Man”, from the former album, was written in tribute to Slovak.

This Vincente Minnelli-directed Lerner and Loewe movie musical is often considered the last great big screen MGM musical production. Gigi was literally star-studded all the way, from behind the scenes to the big name actors listed on the marquee. The legendary Arthur Freed produced—also his last great film—and Andre Previn conducted the orchestra, with the incomparable Alan Jay Lerner penning the screenplay and the song lyrics with music by Frederick Loewe.
