I randomly ended up catching the band PAPA at the Music Hall of Williamsburg on the third night of CMJ. I just had to see something even though I wasn’t out long. Fortunately, I was pleased with what I saw and so was the audience. I’ve posted a clip of their final song that evening below as well as some photos. The band is currently on tour with Cold War Kids before their tour turns to Europe (including Iceland Airwaves) and then back through Canada and the West Coast of the US. You can visit the official website of the band here to check out the tour dates and their music.
New York’s CMJ Music Marathon kicks off in a couple of weeks and if you are attending, be prepared to run around on not a lot of sleep. There are so many artists performing that the website doesn’t even keep count. However, there are some names on the list that stand out and some notable events that we’d like to point out. As much as we wish we could, PopMatters is unlikely to catch half of what we want to see. There is just so much going on and while browsing the list of acts, here are a few things that caught my eye based on name recognition or other factors.
Last year, we caught Brooklyn’s Black Taxi at CMJ Music Marathon and this year, the band will again be a part of CMJ with spots on at least three showcases, the No Shame event on October 18th at 2 pm at Cameo Gallery in Brooklyn, then in Manhattan for two gigs on the 19th, at Madison House event in the morning at Rockwood and to the Mercury Lounge again that night. From the way the band’s sound has developed in the past year (listen to the Chiaroscuro EP stream below), I’d be eager to catch them again. Astheir shows are already explosive, this stronger and more confident core of songs will allow for a larger presence on stage.
