Really, someone should put a moratorium on new electronic music sub-genres. But no one has, so here’s British DJ Nut and Rinse: 08 to introduce you to “wonky”. What is wonky, you ask? Well, it’s a mix of garage, dub, R&B, techno and hip-hop, with a lot of video game-inspired sounds apparently. The UK pirate radio station Rinse FM is known for the grime, UK garage and dubstep sub-genres, and wonky basically mixes them all up.

Roots Manuva is the one name here you might recognize, but it’s biting hip-hop from Marco Polo, Frank-N-Dank and Eric Lau who provides the standout moments. Elsewhere, though only 1000 Names’ “Melonball Bounce” is intolerable, but things are a bit too abstract, noisy and video-gamey to really catch on. It’s certainly interesting, but wonky seems best relegated to those crazy nights when you just know you’re headed for an awful hangover.
