The Globes: Sinter Songs

Sometimes it just doesn’t come together. Sinter Songs, a four-song EP from Spokane, Washington quartet the Globes, features competent guitar work, a decent rhythm section and the kind of half-moaned, half-droned vocals so beloved of countless indie bands. (Metaphysical question: how many bands can be “indie” before they stop being “indie” and start being “just the way bands all sound these days”? I’m not really looking for an answer.)

Leadoff track “Stay Awake” is probably the most interesting of the batch, opening as it does with rattling percussion and cat-scratch fretwork before building into something more melodic. “A Stitch Couldn’t Save the World” is a mid-tempo number that exceeds five minutes and is probably longer than it needs to be. Third song “Untitled” is fairly forgettable, while closer “Pretty Birds Above Our Heads” brings us back to moan ‘n’ drone territory. You know, it’s fine. There’s nothing wrong with any of it. But there’s nothing particularly memorable about any of it, either.
