A byway of funky techno, Soul Center’s General Eclectics misses a few beats and canters hook-less through its assortment of dance-floor tunes. Most of the tracks rely predictably on the repetitious and, while there are few serious criticisms that can be made of General Eclectics‘ respectable attempt at doing what it does, one might suggest lack of development as a notable flaw. The work falls on the more experimental side of Thomas Brinkmann, the real name behind the Soul Center alias. On “Pig Peg”, his hi-tech funk struts, summons Hal from 2001: A Space Odyssey, and rabbles with the weird tech flavors sometimes served up by Simian Mobile Disco. It’s an eclectic collection, yes. Seldom does it progress, but certainly it moves.
