Wires in the Walls: New Symmetry

Though not their first release, New Symmetry is Wires in the Walls’ first full length album – and it rather sounds like a debut. What they have going for them is a delicately mixed instrumental bed cultivated through a careful mix. The guitars of Dave Irelan and singer Warren Sroka perfectly intertwine with Dave Sicher’s piano while Nick Tracz’s sinewy bass lines hold the whole thing together impressively. However, each song is rendered impotent by Sroka constantly perusing his upper register with not-up-to-par melodies with lyrics to match — marriage proposals that end with sleeping in, depictions of the “belly of the best” and the insistence to “hang on tight.” In other words, the aspects that differentiate a band like Wires in the Walls from other delicate alterna-Americana acts could use a boost. But like I said, this sounds like a debut.
