Paul Greengrass tackles another real life event, but unlike United 93, the results are mixed at best. Somali pirates hijack an American freighter . Tom Hanks is the brave Captain who tries to talk the desperate men out of harming anyone before being kidnapped and held for ransom. Early reviews called this one of Greengrass’s best, but those raves should be take with a significant dram of sea salt. The movie is very one note, doesn’t offer any significant narrative nuance, and requires a stellar turn by Tom Hanks in the last 10 minutes to make the rest of the experience worthwhile.

Stop Robert Rodriguez! Just STOP! You’ve already proven you have no true eye for exploitation and your constant regurgitation of grindhouse tropes is growing tiresome. Besides, we’d rather see you devote your DIY mentality to something more significant…like that Sin City sequel you’ve been promising us for eight years. In any case, beefy B-icon Danny Trejo returns as the title character, a former cops turned special ops agent turned mercenary who typically battles interesting cameo turns from the likes of Jeff Fahey and Robert DeNiro. This time out, Mel Gibson, Lady Gaga, and Charlie Sheen show up to chew some scenery.

We’ve been curious about this film ever since audiences began buzzing about its House of Mouse affronts during Sundance. In fact, many of us in the biz wondered is director Randy Moore would be able to get away with having the film released, considering the negative light cast on certain Disney properties and profit-generating icons. Oddly enough, however, Walt’s workers have been surprisingly silent on the subject, while many legal authorities argue that ‘Fair Use’ trumps any copyright claim. Our advice? No matter the reviews, see it before someone unfreezes Mr. Disney’s dome and he (or they) decide to sue.

We don’t know much about this movie. It’s a haunted house film featuring Oscar nominee Jacki Weaver…and that’s about it. The rest of the cast are more or less unknowns and director Mac Carter is a first time feature filmmaker (he did do a documentary on DC Comics back in 2010). The story centers on a young girl who falls for her attractive neighbor, with both soon investigating the past of the homestead the girl’s parents have just bought. Apparently, they’re plagued by ghosts or demons or ghouls or goblins or fluctuating mortgage rates. Whatever. Horror is hot right now. Sadly, James Wan is nowhere in sight.

Way back in 2006, Jonathan Levine unveiled his deconstruction of the slasher film to festival audiences. Widely praised, it became the subject of a bidding war with Harvey Weinstein winning out. After a horrible test screening which saw focus group audiences more or less reject the film, the mogul sold his interest to Senator Entertainment. They soon went out of business. The rights then lagged and Levine went off to direct The Wackness, 50/50, and the ZomRomCom (zombie romantic comedy) Warm Bodies. Then Harvey and his hefty checkbook came back into the picture. Time to see if it was all worth the trouble.

While we have eagerly anticipated this film ever since it was announced, at least one reliable source considers this one of the, if not THE worst film of 2013. Richard Metzger and his site Dangerous Minds have been rallying against this movie since the trailers arrived, and now having seen it, they believe it truly stinks on ice. Granted, any cinematic statement which dares sully the reputation of such seminal punk bands as Blondie, Talking Heads, and Ramones is already asking for trouble. Now, with critiques complaining about the subject matter and the way it’s being approached, one guesses this is pretty godawful.
