Anyone who has not quite sold themselves on the hype of Hot Chip might be wise to check out this surprising collaborative EP with longtime associates Geese and British psychedelic rock legend Robert Wyatt. Practically abandoning the dance floor thump that either caused you bust a move at your local hipster haunt or scratch your head in wonderment as to what the hype was all about, the Chip certainly aim to change a few minds with this quirky art-pop set. Recorded at Gallery Studios in early 2008, the three tracks hand-selected by Wyatt off Hot Chip’s latest offering Made in the Dark to re-envision for this EP — the title cut, “Whistle for Will” and “We’re Looking for a Lot of Love” — all sound as though they could’ve easily been outtakes from one of Wyatt’s own solo gems, notably his 1974 art-pop masterpiece Rock Bottom. Meanwhile, the fourth track, a Geese remix of “One Pure Thought”, leans closer towards the Books than the club. Can the next full-length sound more like this, please?
