Since Warp set sister label Lex free in 2005, the primarily electronic Warp has taken an interest in indie bands like Battles, Maxïmo Park, and Born Ruffians, while the primarily hip-hop Lex has found release for weird acts like Fog, Neon Neon. Unlike the aforementioned Lex pursuits, Tiago La Is Losing The Plot (a.k.a. Drew Brown) has only a passing interest in the fusion of sampling, synthesis, and indie rock. For the most part, he is a simple folk pop artist the likes of which wouldn’t be out of place on Ani DiFranco’s Righteous Babe Records. Brown uses the odd drum machine and reverb loop to increase the tension of his already compelling vocals (akin to Elliot Smith or Sufjan Stevens with less crazy) and pained yet purposeful acoustic guitar. As a teaser for his upcoming full-length debut, this eponymous EP does the trick. Color me teased.
