Everything about Megan Munroe seems pre-packaged to appeal to today’s country audience. She’s a pretty young brunette with a decent voice who did indeed grow up in rural America. Okay, it was Washington state, but you know, Keith Urban isn’t even American so it’s probably okay that Megan isn’t from the South. Oh, and she co-writes every song on the album to give her that dash of credibility. Her copious press materials say she plays guitar and piano, but of course she doesn’t play a single instrument on One More Broken String. That’s left to an ace crew of session musicians who give each song an energetic, professional performance.

All of which leaves One More Broken String as a perfectly competent album that covers completely familiar country territory. There’s the upbeat “Angel on My Shoulder (Devil on My Back)” about being a good Christian who also likes to drink and party on weekends. And “Moonshine”, the rockin’ ode to nights outside partying in the back of a pickup truck. And let’s not forget “Leavin’ Memphis”, the story of a woman, abandoned by her cheatin’ boyfriend, who tracks him across the country to Los Angeles and forces him to come back with her to Memphis. The end result is a an album that’s about as average as you can get, right down the middle of the road.
