Boo and Boo Too: Boo and Boo Too

The music of Lawrence, KS sextet Boo and Boo Too harks back to the mid-1990s — a time when the sound of oddly-tuned guitars felt like a revolution, a time when Sonic Youth albums could hit the Billboard Top 40. All four songs on the band’s self-titled EP are canvases atop which its three guitarists splatter waves of distorted, clashing chords. Amp buzzes, bum notes and feedback fill what little space is left in the music. The band leaves very little breathing room for its listeners (is that a piano I hear on “David Turns a Mystic”?), which isn’t necessarily a bad thing: when they slow things down on “You Are a Tide”, the limitations of guitarist Barret Emke’s tremulous, histrionic singing become garishly apparent. Still, if their upcoming full-length (which is due in September) is even a bit less monolithic, it should be a stunner.
