The trumpet is a hard instrument for a listener to warm up to. It’s harsh, brassy sound tends to jar one’s ears more than placate the soul. Brad Goode compensates for this by playing things cool and quiet. His self-penned ode “Celedon” is performed at a low volume and a slow tempo that emphasizes the space between the notes more than the phrasing itself. He’s accompanied by Jeff Jenkins on piano, Johannes Weidenmueller on bass, and Todd Reid on drums. The four of them take turns at artfully turning melodies into solo set pieces that may move fast, but never seem hurried. The mood is always mellow, even when the combo performs old pop hits like “Sealed With a Kiss” and the title track.
