Buildings Breeding: Buildings Breeding

Be careful what you wish for, for it may come true. Buildings Breeding started off as a fake group on MySpace, but now it appears that the joke is on the group, as they’ve seen their music garnering notice in some circles. This record has a very light, soft feeling to it that seems to glide along without a care in the world, especially during the roots-y “Stacking Up Reasons” and the whispered “Leaving Out the Punch”, which brings to mind a demo from Paul Westerberg or Bright Eyes. The airy feeling continues as Melanie Glover sings sweetly and tenderly during “Emmawood” and the Belle and Sebastian-ish “Beesting”. But things don’t seem to gather momentum, with “Nothing Sacred Here” being mediocre, while “Youth Is All That’s Left” and “In My Hands” sound like wasted opportunities despite the vocals being pleasing and memorable a la Roger McGuinn. The album ends on an Americana-leaning downer a la Wilco with “Slowly to Sleep”. On the whole it’s good, but nothing to get your knickers in a boy scout knot over.
