Bigger might not always be better, but it definitely feels that way sometimes. For every exception to the rule (coughWaterworldcough), there seems to be someone like the Carbon Dating Service. The Saskatoon-based indie-rock ten-piece are clearly at their best when they’re at their biggest, letting their quiet, folksy pop tunes build into soaring climaxes of choirs, horns, strings, and random electronic squiggles. It’s what makes “Light up the Synchrotron” and “The Starbeat Academy Graduation March” Polyentendrii‘s best tracks — but there’s also a downside: there are times on the record (like for the first six minutes of the seven-minute “Another You”) when you can’t help but feel like you’re just waiting around for something to happen.
