There’s been so much said about this record, I’m at a loss. It also doesn’t help that I don’t speak the lingo of techno. What I do know is that the 13 songs on Chromophobia are as colorful as the album artwork. Each song has a corresponding hue: “Shebang” is swampy green; “Chromophobia” is tubular gray; “Mr Decay” is LED red; and “The Verdict” is night brake-light yellow. The latter third of the record jumps ship almost entirely into electro-shoegazing terrain. “Beautiful Life” resembles a subtler Ulrich Schnauss song while “Xilo” has a Peter Hook-ish bass line at its core. Those looking for a little more evocative (obvious) emotion with their techno should definitely check out Boratto’s colorscapes.
