Tulsa: I Was Submerged

The mini-album debut from Boston’s own Tulsa, I Was Submerged is a true pusher of all the right indie rock buttons. It is rife with reverb, melodic guitars contrasting acoustic and electric, the odd piece of psychedelic keyboard, sweetly echoing vocals, and downtrodden lyrics, all in the critically obvious vein of My Morning Jacket. Hints of country and grunge influence pop up from time to time, but even with the sullen words, this is a true indie-pop gem of the highest order, through and through. Well, the opening, mostly instrumental “I Feel Great” does lean a little to the cheesy side of early ’90s alternative radio, but the record settles down from there into a series of more heartfelt progressions. Their first full-length is bound to start a cult or maybe even spawn New Tulsa, Massachusetts.
