Since being funny comes naturally to comedian Kym Whitley, she couldn’t imagine being anything else.
“The best thing in life is to do what you love and to get paid for it,” says Whitley. “I would do this for free; to get paid for it is a blessing.”
Multiple blessings have come her way lately. Whitley, best known as the prostitute Larry David hires so he can ride the HOV lane in “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” has a ton of projects.
First up, “Black Dynamite,” starring Michael Jai White as a one-man army looking to avenge his brother’s death. In the ‘70s-style blaxploitation spoof, Whitley plays Honey Bee, who runs a house of ill repute.
Not too far a stretch from her hysterical “Curb” character, her favorite role to date. Working with David was a hoot.
“I love Larry! He is the same man on-screen and off-screen,” the Ohio native, 48, says. “Since it’s improv, Larry will bust out laughing in the middle of a scene, and if he likes something he’ll say, ‘OK, OK, OK, OK. Do that same thing, just do it again.’ To have that kind of creative freedom, it’s like you’re really writing, so it’s fun.”
Whitley’s voice will also be heard as Auntie Momma on the Thanksgiving special (Nov. 22) of Fox’s “The Cleveland Show,” a spinoff of “Family Guy” focusing on Peter’s former neighbor.
“Not to give out too many secrets, but I’m really out of control on that,” Whitley admits. “It’s pretty out of order.”
