ShareLOS ANGELES — The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame hopes to bring music lovers a bit closer to the Cleveland-based museum with the debut of its first iPhone app.
Based on the “Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll” permanent exhibit at the museum, the app — which debuted Wednesday — offers a virtual exploration of the more than 600 tracks selected by Rock Hall curatorial staff, rock critics and historians that have been pegged as “some of rock ‘n’ roll’s most popular and influential recordings.”
The app features a slideshow that users can swipe through to select the music of a specific decade between 1920 and 2006.
Once a decade is chosen, album covers are displayed with mini-essays on the song, album and artist. Users can then sample the featured track, purchase it via iTunes and add it to a customized playlist housed within the app.
“The Rock Hall app allows our visitors to take a piece of the museum home and at the same time shares the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum experience with music lovers who haven’t had the opportunity to visit,” Rock Hall spokesman Todd Mesek said in a statement. “We wanted to share the Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll exhibit and tell that story in as many ways as possible.”
Recently, “American Idol” contestants performed selections from the curated list, including tracks from Creedence Clearwater Revival, Janis Joplin, Michael Jackson, Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner, Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash.
The Rock Hall app is available in the iTunes app store for $1.99.
