Hohman said today in his review of Lily Allen’s new album, It’s Not Me, It’s You: “Allen is a pop-music mean girl; like Regina George or Hilary Faye, she is a complex, study in 21st century womanhood. She reflects a culture where spoiled, overindulged young women feel not just entitled, but obligated, to become bitchy supervillains, because it sure as hell beats being a powerless victim like the confined, repressed sad sacks surrounding them. If not for this central conflict, Allen would be an insufferable git. But even when she’s infuriating, especially when she’s infuriating, she’s an enthralling performer, her personality taking her where her limited vocals cannot.”
That “enthralling performer” will drop by NBC’s Today show for a morning appearance, followed by an evening concert the Bowery Ballroom in New York. And so begins her 2009 US ubiquity. On February 16th, she’ll grace the telly screens again on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and The Ellen DeGeneres Show on the 18th.
