ShareThe 3-D animated film “Monsters vs. Aliens” was easily the top draw at U.S. movie theaters this weekend, bringing in some $58.2 million through Sunday morning, according to studio estimates.
The science-fiction comedy from DreamWorks Animation made its debut this week, and was distributed by Paramount Pictures, a unit of Viacom Inc.

“The Haunting in Connecticut,” which also made its debut, was in second place with $23 million. The film was released by Lions Gate Entertainment.
The Nicholas Cage science-fiction thriller “Knowing,” which was No. 1 last weekend, dropped to third place, with $14.7 million. The film was released by the privately held Summit Entertainment.
In fourth place, earning $12.6 million, was Viacom’s “I Love You, Man,” and in fifth place, with $7.6 million, was Universal Pictures’ international spy thriller “Duplicity.”
Disney’s “Race to Witch Mountain” was in sixth place, with $5.6 million.
Another debut picture, “12 Rounds” from News Corp.‘s (NWS) Fox, took seventh place, with $5.3 million.
Time Warner’s “Watchmen” took in $2.8 million, and Fox’s kidnap thriller “Taken” was in ninth place, with $2.7 million.
Rounding out the top ten, Universal’s horror thriller “The Last House on the Left” brought in $2.6 million.
