Meet the cast and crew of ‘Star Trek’[7 May 2009] By Rick BentleyMcClatchy Newspapers (MCT) Here’s a quick look at the “Star Trek” crew. James T. Kirk You know Pine from: “Bottle Shock,” “Smokin’ Aces.” What he says about all of the stunt work: “We had a great stunt team behind us. I guess the only anecdote worth mentioning is that on my first day of shooting was the bar scene in the beginning of the movie and I ended up breaking a stunt guy’s nose on the second take. Word of caution to any young actor out there. Do not hurt stuntmen because they will pay you back in kind. The next take after that, that big stunt guy kicked me in the stomach. He said it wasn’t on purpose but I don’t know.” Spock You know Quinto from: “Heroes,” “24.” What he says about his first meeting with director J.J. Abrams: “I remember when I first talked to J.J. about playing the role. I was in there for 45 minutes, and I think he spoke for 43 of them. There was such an overwhelming vision and enthusiasm and clarity about what he wanted this to be, and almost, more importantly, what he didn’t want it to be. And that, for me, set a really solid framework in which we were all allowed to play and explore and discover on our own.” Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy You know Urban from: “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King,” “The Chronicles of Riddick.” What he says about when he realized the impact of “Star Trek”: “I think after the second day I found out I was given the opportunity to be in this film, I was driving down the road in Santa Monica and stopped at a random set of lights and a gentleman in a ‘Star Trek’ outfit walk crossed the road. It struck me at that point the effect this wonderful series has had in our popular culture.” Nyota Uhura You know Saldana from: “Six Degrees,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.” What she says about her surprise storyline: “If there was a camera showing you guys when I was in that office. They locked us in the office at Bad Robot and we had to read the script. I dropped it and I grabbed my Blackberry. I kept saying, ‘This man’s crazy! J.J.‘s out of his mind. I’m not that aware about ‘Star Trek,’ but I do know that they never mingled. It’s crazy!’ Then, once I finished the script, it made so much sense.” Hikaru Sulu You know Cho from: “Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle,’ “Kitchen Confidential.” What Cho says about his first reaction to the “Star Trek” TV show: “My primary connection to the show was just being excited about George being on television. George Takei. Just yelling across the house, ‘There’s an Asian guy on TV. There’s an Asian guy on TV. Come quick, come quick. He may disappear. He may disappear.’” Pavel Chekov You know Yelchin from: “Charlie Bartlett,” “Terminator Salvation.” What he says about taking on the role: “I thought I was born to be this character. No, I actually wasn’t a fan. I’m a fan now. I watched a lot of the original series. There’s just something so kind of great about it, you can’t help but really love it.” Montgomery “Scotty” Scott You know Pegg from: “Shaun of the Dead,” “Run, Fat Boy, Run.” “Hot Fuzz.” What he says about the movie: “I loved that the script allows each of the characters to say lines that made them famous without an sort of ‘wink-wink, isn’t that funny’ kind of thing. Each character gets to have his or her iconic moment, but never at the expense of the story.” Related Articles
