One of the articles I saw about the new Indonesian movie The Raid: Redemption has the headline “THE RAID Punches Indonesia’s Box Office in the Face”. The score for this movie is half the fun and just as likely to punch you in the face then give you a few jabs in the torso as you fall to the ground. The brutal action film has some crazy choreographed fight scenes accompanied with a score composed by Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park and Joseph Trapanese. The movie is slowly rolling out in theaters around the US (the unnecessary subtitle was given for our market) but the soundtrack is available for streaming now and can be purchased at the official site (the only place for the CD version it says). The music is heavy on synthesizers and percussion may not win any awards but it will get your blood rising.

The Dandy Warhols are getting ready to release another album (their eighth since 1995) on April 24 called This Machine. In anticipation, the band provides a sneak peak of the track “Sad Vacation” as a free download—instantly recognizable with the band’s bottom heavy approach, adding in doubled vocals across an octave and wailing guitars that disintegrate into a very unpolished finish. Their signature in-your-face, inexcusable vibe continues on.

Brooklyn’s Freshkills are back with a propulsive, post-punk set with Raise Up the Sheets, released on 13 March via Bat Rabies/The End Records. To really bring their kinetic energy to life on the new recording, the band brought in No Wave vet Jim Sclavunos (Sonic Youth, Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, the Cramps, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds). Sclavunos says, “Freshkills inhabit a dark but thrilling underworld in which relentless machine-like rhythmic intensity hammers ear-anvils at the bidding of wryly louche after-hours philosophy. They’re the visceral embodiment of power and poetry.” That is on full display in the new tune “Bigger Man,” which you can sample in original form after the jump in stream and video form, but today we bring you a remix of the song by Doctor Israel, who injects a hip-hop mixed with Big Beat vibe into the music.

The duo of Alex Scally and Victoria Legrand, otherwise known as Beach House, return with their latest album Bloom in May and are previewing the work with an MP3 for “Myth”. Beach House conceived of the work as an Album, in the truest sense of the word, a cohesive, longform artistic statement. “Many songs were omitted or dropped because they lacked a place within our vision for this album,” says Scally.

June 12th brings a new album from legendary singer-songwriter Bobby Womack, The Bravest Man in the Universe, intriguingly produced by Damon Albarn (Blur, Gorillaz) and Richard Russell (XL Records label head).
