All that's left in the Best Actor race is to read the name pointlessly hidden in the envelope says Ben Travers...

In a year where many of the Oscar races are still wide open, there’s one in the Top Six that’s definitively been decided. Daniel Day-Lewis has had a lock on his third Academy Award since the first image from Lincoln was released. Ok, so maybe a few voters waited to actually see his uncanny interpretation of our 16th president, but even they had to be won over before David Oyelowo finished reciting the Gettysburg Address.

No, all that’s left in the Best Actor race is to read the name pointlessly hidden in the envelope. But what if there was more? What if someone else could still win? I’m not about to put forth a theory suggesting any of the other four nominees could actually beat Day-Lewis. That’s not going to happen. Just imagine that DDL isn’t in the race. Maybe he was unjustly snubbed like Ben Affleck and Kathryn Bigelow. Maybe Lincoln was pushed back a year so he didn’t qualify. Whatever you want the scenario to be, it involves a wide open Best Actor field from this point forward.

Best Actress nominee Jennifer Lawrence has been setting red carpets on fire all season...

A few years ago, the name Jennifer Lawrence meant nothing to filmgoers. After being introduced to us in the forgettable The Burning Plain, she had a phenomenal breakthrough with the award winning Winter’s Bone which garnered her an Oscar nomination for Best Actress. Fast forward two years and she’s the star of two big budget franchises and might just be on her way to winning Best Actress for her brilliant work in Silver Linings Playbook. J.Law has captured the hearts of people all over the world with her sincere, charming, no-filter kind of personality and of course a talent beyond her young age. However even more remarkable is how she’s so effortlessly mastered the art of red carpet looks. Her evolution can be determined in how she went from looking like a girl next door with diamonds, to how now she’s the face of a legendary fashion house. Let’s take a look at J.Law’s wonderful fashion evolution in five looks.

Jim Carrey has delivered at least five—yes, FIVE—performances deserving of Oscar consideration, but how many nominations does he deserve out of that lot? Ben Travers hashes it out.

The answer to the title question may seem simple: obviously Jim Carrey is a comedian. Comedians don’t win Oscars.

While anyone familiar with Carrey’s post Ace Ventura career knows the former isn’t true—nor should the latter be— they also know that Jim Carrey has delivered at least five—yes, FIVE—performances truly deserving of Oscar consideration, but how many nominations does he deserve out of that lot? Ben Travers hashes it out:

Jose is over 2012 and moving right along to Best Actor 2013...

The 2012 awards season may not be over yet, but if like me, you’re already fed up with all the Argo nonsense, it’s a perfect time to take a look at the movies of 2013. I originally saw Yossi last year but was pleased to realize that it hadn’t been released in the United States, therefore making it eligible for awards consideration this year. The movie was released a few weeks ago in NYC and is currently playing in a couple of arthouses. If you haven’t seen it, run to the theater. Movies released early during the year are usually forgotten by the time all the Oscar juggernauts arrive…

Jose ponders what other notable films could have easily come up in the race to the nominees circle in the Foreign Language Film category...

Last year’s roster of foreign language film submissions was so rich, that you can argue that even if the lineup is one of the greatest the category has seen in years (and no embarrassing mention to The Intouchables!) there were still many movies that could’ve fit among the final nominees. Other than Amour the other nominees could’ve easily been replaced by any of these:
