Side Show Suckers

[2 April 2007]

by Mikita Brottman

For those waiting on a cold night for a shrunken head, a vampire-killing silver bullet, and the last, nasty little shred of Abe Lincoln, they would only be misled and deceived, yet again.

Kind of a shame.  I remember my freshman year at MICA there was a great lecture by one of the guys from mummy roadshow and the guys from the museum about sideshow mummies (those don’t happen nearly enough at MICA).  I never did make it there, I always thought it was closed.  But at least I saw that giant ball of string, too.

The girls collected in Surton's photographs evoke butterflies pinned to a board in the dusty attic of a lonely lepidopterist.
