Bono at Live 8
Behind the MusicMixtape Confessions[27 March 2007] by Ben RubensteinIt's impossible to listen to music in a vacuum, to take the sound of a band on its own merits. There are so many outside factors at play – reviews, friends opinions, larger cultural influences . . .
I enjoyed this article. I’m a fan of Bono and I get sick of him too. LOL However, when reporting something as potentially scathing as the $18M donated vs. $100M spent in regards to the Red campaign - you should report the FACTS. The fact is that in 6 months $18M was donated. The $100M spent was advertising money that would have been spent by these corporations on advertising anyway. This was not money diverted from any other use. In addition, the campaign is only 6 months old. Let’s take some time before we call it a failure. Oh, and Bono’s likeness was not used in the advertising. He did promote the RED products on his own, but the advertising dollars were not spent on materials featuring Bono’s likeness. Finally, the RED products are aimed at introducing people to the “cause”. A lot of these people are people who would not/do not already give - so it raises awareness to them. Really, what’s the harm? I see it as a win/win. Elizabeth, Thanks for clearing that up—I admit, didn’t do my research on that one. I was repeating, word for word, an email I received and, given my stated bias, was more than willing to believe. Obviously, any awareness the campaign raises makes it a worthwhile effort. Maybe I’m just trying to excuse myself for buying a black iPod instead of a RED one. Comment by Ben — March 29, 2007 @ 10:18 am Ben - I didn’t buy the RED ipod either. LOL Look forward to reading more of your work. PopMatters sponsor Mixtape ConfessionsEvent EtiquetteBen Rubenstein02.Sep.08 Enthusiasm at sporting events and concerts is great. But when your spirited dancing turns into a one-man mosh pit, it's a damned annoying distraction. Gone Festin'Ben Rubenstein28.Jul.08 Yes, communing with thousands of music fans at summer festivals is fun...for a while. But then it becomes a group of people whom you really didn't plan on spending your weekend with, unless you typically hang out with stoned 16-year olds. Getting SchooledBen Rubenstein01.Jul.08 More than the usual ABCs, this school clearly believes in arts education, regularly spotlighting student performers at its assemblies -- and these kids are acquiring real musical skills.
