Mic'd UpMixtape Confessions[4 December 2007] by Ben RubensteinKaraoke: Those who can't, do anyway; those who wish they could, only watch in mute rapture.
Mixtape ConfessionsEvent EtiquetteBen Rubenstein02.Sep.08 Enthusiasm at sporting events and concerts is great. But when your spirited dancing turns into a one-man mosh pit, it's a damned annoying distraction. Gone Festin'Ben Rubenstein28.Jul.08 Yes, communing with thousands of music fans at summer festivals is fun...for a while. But then it becomes a group of people whom you really didn't plan on spending your weekend with, unless you typically hang out with stoned 16-year olds. Getting SchooledBen Rubenstein01.Jul.08 More than the usual ABCs, this school clearly believes in arts education, regularly spotlighting student performers at its assemblies -- and these kids are acquiring real musical skills.

Okay, Ben, I opened this up all ready to be offended and then defend my karaoke love, but this was a gentle piece, and true in oh-so-many ways. I’ve actually kicked around a character study of karaoke bars in my head a bit because it’s such a strangely diverse, yet simultaneously communal thing. Great job picking out some definite “types” here. My only addendum would be that “Regulars” sometimes travel in packs, making them seem less like loners and more like a group of dedicated frea...err, fanatics. Not that I’d know anything about that. :-)
