The Ballot or the Beef

[14 March 2008]

It's possible that hip-hop and the US government have been engaged in the longest running beef of all, from the infamous FBI letter sent to NWA in 1998 to the Congressional Hearings in 2007 seeking to investigate hip-hop lyrics.

Nice article.

Really, if the situation is so bad that somebody can be driven to murder by a rap song, the government has much bigger problems to deal with than whether or not to censor art.

At least politicians are starting to realize now that if they attack art for the viewpoints it expresses, they’re the ones who come off looking silly.

A more accurate statement for Kanye would have been “George Bush doesn’t care about poor people”.  It just so happens, the specific poor people in question in New Orleans were mostly black.  He cares about rich black people just fine.
