The Cagney features collected here are not "must-owns", but they are enjoyable "might-owns" for anyone who takes pleasure in watching a talented actor finding moments of undiluted joy in work-a-day films.
I suppose everyone has his own taste, but it was interesting how much you admire James Cagney who championed Doris Day as “one of the best actresses with whom I’ve appeared. I found in her the same qualties I saw in the great Laurette Taylor.”
That was probably the reason he insisted on Day for the lead in “Love Me or Leave Me.” Even though I saw inconsistencies in her performance, I blame that on the director of the film, Charles Vidor. Otherwise, I agree with countless critics who praised her overall.
