Electric Litigationland[10 May 2007] by Michael E. RossThe lucrative marketing of Jimi Hendrix's image has spawned a series of lawsuits and possibly a reality show.
Read Michael Ross’ piecde on Hendrix with great interest. Have to let you know that the Hendrix branded wine was of the non-alcoholic variety. Experience Hendrix has been consistant in refusing to lend Jimi’s name/likeness to purvveyors of anything alcohol-related. I hope the piece can be corrected to note this. FYI, in the spirit of full disclosure, I’m letting you know that Experience Hendrix, LLC is my PR client. Comment by Bob Merlis from Los Angeles — May 12, 2007 @ 7:05 pm Very informative article. From what I’ve heard though, the Hendrix Estate’s “Myriad family connections” consist of only one blood relative of Jimi Hendrix’s at their company Experience Hendrix - a cousin. Bob from L.A. is correct, their Wine was non alcoholic but Jimi and his father certainly weren’t. They also don’t license Jimi’s image to any projects that contain any reference to sex or drugs so apparently Jimi is enjoying a revival as Pat Boone and would have prefered baby clothes and air freshener to libation. You can chop it up anyway you want but Jimi’s blood relatives not benefiting from his legacy is inexcusable. Clearly out of the two, the company making the Vodka is more representative of Jimi and his true family. Bob from L.A. should be ashamed to work for such people, I guess the pay is right. Comment by Ernie from St. Louis, MI — May 24, 2007 @ 7:55 pm I agree with Ernie from St. Louis. Bob should be ashamed to work for the likes of Janie Hendrix (who by the way is white and adopted into the Hendrix family 2 years before Jimi died). From what I’ve read in various articles Janie Hendrix has given all the real Hendrix family members the boot by cuting off any funds to Jimi’s brother Leon Hendrix his kids and about a dozen other Hendrix family members who are all living in poverty while Janie Hendrix lives a lavish life. And even if the red wine was non-alcoholic it’s still in worse taste than the Hendrix Electric Vodka being sold by Leon Hendrix. Didn’t Janie Hendrix say it was a sick joke to market Hendrix Vodka when JImi died from “Red Wine”................ And Janie Hendrix sold RED WINE!!! Comment by Rachel from South Beach Miami — May 26, 2007 @ 1:36 pm PopMatters sponsor Cultural connections to Hendrix are tenuous at best. Shut up punk. Its not about that. Listen to his music. read his interviews. ‘Were all brothers and sisters arent we’. ‘In the eyes of God were all children to him’. The connection is strong, not tenuous. But I think its a shame how they are commercializing Jimi Hendrix. I dont think he would really appreciate the ‘buttons, coffee cups’ and all the other crap they are selling. And also, they have the whole Hendrix catalogue, and they are releasing shows that people have already heard before. They need somebody in charge of that operation who knows about people who actually listen to and love jimi, not just people who buy his merchandise and use his cds for drink holders.
